Smithgall Woods
Smithgall Woods is only 2 miles from Little Andy Mountain! This one-stop-shop per say has everything you would need or want to do in a day! Smithgall offers 5 miles worth of trails & 18 miles of roads allowing both hikers and bicyclists tp explore the woods, streams and wildlife. Hike to tumbling waterfalls, goldmines, & the creek beds of Duke's creek! Our go to trail is Tsalaki Trail, the park's main road. This road leads to many trailheads but it also follow's Duke's Creek and crosses over a beautiful Covered Bridge (usually where we stop and turn around). This hike/path is long & does have quite a bit up hill but is a super relaxing and enjoyable day! The last time we did this, we did with my 70 year old mother and 1 year old son (he walked and was in a stroller)! As with any hike, be sure to bring water and if you have kids, snacks!
Smithgall woods is also a fisherman's paradise! Duke's Creek runs through the property allowing for excellent trout fishing. Fishing is catch and release and only allowed Wednesday, Saturdays and Sundays during Oct-May and does require a reservation (and fishing license). Much of Duke's Creek offers large deep pools with some occasional fast water. The stream offers sections of flat water for dry fly fishing & nice long pools to drift through.
Other activities offered at Smithgall Woods: archery, biking, birdwatching, hunting (be sure to check hunting schedule), interpretive programs, & educational programs.
